THE NEIGHBORHOOD JUNIOR TENNIS PROGRAM
The NJTP is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization
established in 1993 and located in the Northeast San Fernando
Valley. In 2004 we were given the "Member Organization
of the Year Award" from the Southern California Tennis
Association. NJTP President Steve Tscherne received the West
Los Angeles "Volunteer of the Year Award" from
United Parcel Service in 2006.
Our goal is to give children
an alternative to gangs and drugs through tennis. We stress education
as well as tennis. Our motto is from the "courts to college".
We currently teach six days a week, twelve months a year. Our
students' ages range from 3 to 18.
We have introduced tennis to thousands of children. Currently
over a hundred kids are enrolled in our youth program. Many of
our students receive lessons free of charge and those who do
pay are charged a nominal fee. We produce a quarterly newsletter
called "SMASH TALK". Our instructors are USPTA
certified.
We have graced the cover
of Southern California Golf and Tennis Magazine, SCTA newsletter,
and have had articles about our program in the LA Times, Daily
News, Tennis Week, and Inside Tennis Magazine. Four major events
raise crucial funds to finance our program annually. Our biggest
fundraisers are the NJTP Bike-A-Thon and Walk/Run, and the Toluca
Lake Pro Show-Down.

IN 2008, NJTP CELEBRATED
ITS 15TH BIRTHDAY
In January 1993 the NJTP went from an idea to reality. 95% of
the current NJTP students werent even born in 1993. During
this impressive run we have had articles in the LA Times, the
Daily News, Tennis Week, and Southern California Golf and Tennis
Magazine. We have been awarded the 2004 SCTA MEMBER ORGANIZATION
OF THE YEAR award. Steve Tscherne, the president, received
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD from UPS in 2006, and
was given THE PRESIDENTIAL SERVICE AWARD for volunteerism
from President George Bush in 2007.
We have taught over 10,000 hours of tennis, used 12,000 tennis
balls and introduced tennis to thousands of children. Our fundraisers
included: 12 Bike and Run Marathons where we had run and biked
over 13,000 miles, 5 Pro Showdowns, 30 Lightning and Sanctioned
Tournaments. We have attended Davis Cup, WTA Womens Championships
and Countrywide Tournaments. Our tennis kids have won City Championships,
played at seven different high schools, played college tennis
and have become tennis instructors. It's been some ride.

NJTP RECEIVES AWARDS!!!
Jeff Richards, the director
of tennis at Calabasas spoke highly of the Neighborhood Junior
Tennis Program when he dedicated his award to the NJTP for their
work in the community. It was given to NJTP Board Steve Tscherne,
Barbara Tscherne, Ruben Mejorado and Philip Siordia and several
NJTP children on center court of the Calabasas Tennis Club. This
was very special since it was preceding a feature match with
American Donald Young. Donald went on to the final of the tournament
later that weekend. It was a thrill to see this future superstar
up close, as well as, to be recognized as one of the leading
community tennis associations in the LA area. We are pleased
to add this accolade to our growing list of awards.
