NJTP SMASH TALK Newsletter Spring 2010

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
By STEVE TSCHERNE
SUMMER TIME IS PLAYING TIME!!!
Summer is quickly approaching and it’s time to rev up your efforts on the tennis court. The days are longer, allowing more time to practice. School is coming to a close so there is no more homework or early bedtimes. So head to the park, call a fellow NJTP student or your parents and play, play and play. It’s also a great time to take a semi-private or private lesson weekly. Ask your favorite coach and set up a lesson time. The more you play, the more you will improve your game and the more fun you will have.
NJTP RUNS, WALKS AND RIDES
PASADENA MARATHON
On Sunday, February 21, 2010, 12 NJTP parents, 4 board members, 13 NJTP children, and 10 friends of the Neighborhood Junior Tennis Program took part in the Pasadena 5K, half marathon, marathon and bike marathon. These efforts raised funds for our program for the 14th consecutive year. The 26.2 mile bike marathon started at 6:15 a.m. during a steady drizzle which lasted off and on through the challenging but beautiful and hilly course.
We biked past the Rose Bowl and through numerous neighborhoods with sprawling estates and century old mansions. The 5K had the most participants, which started at 7:30 a.m. under cool, but sunny conditions. Many parents did the events with their children, including 5 year olds- Elias Contreras and Dylan Brown. The 5K started and finished in front of the Pasadena Library. A few brave and bold people finished the day doing both the half and whole marathon.

Pasadena was a first for the NJTP, after doing the LA Marathon for 13 years. However everyone really enjoyed the course and the bike marathoners were happy to see a less crowded course with no biking wrecks or accidents. The finish line was a party with live music and food and drinks. The entire NJTP family would like to thank the nearly 200 companies, friends, and family members who made pledges and donations, especially in these troubled economic times. Thank you so much!!!

EL CARISO PARK ADDS FITNESS ZONE
The NJTP Board members, Steve and Barbara Tscherne, were privileged to attend the opening ceremonies of the NEW FITNESS ZONE at El Cariso Park. County Supervisor, Zev Yaroslavsky, posed for the picture with Steve and Barbara Tscherne moments before the opening ceremony. The new $45,000.00 outdoor fitness area is located just above the brand new pool. This is a great addition to an already beautiful El Cariso Park. This event took place in conjunction with the opening of the beautiful new gym and workout facility at Mission College. El Cariso Park has also added a 1 mile and a 1/2 mile running tracks around the park, as well as, improvements to the golf course. The NJTP is thrilled to have such a beautiful park and encourage the NJTP children and their parents to use the facilities to improve their health and create a great family atmosphere for fun, exercise and family gathering.

TOLUCA LAKE PRO-AM POSTPONED
The Toluca Lake Pro-Am will still be held this year, but not until the fall of 2010, probably sometime in September. Tennis Director, Ben Brunkow, made it clear that the change of date will benefit the NJTP as he feels his membership can better support this wonderful event at that time. Don’t worry Ben, “We Still Feel the Love”. The NJTP still held the raffle and many nice gifts were given away. Thanks to all those who bought and sold raffle tickets. Here are the lucky winners: Leo Abeysekera, Jose Diaz, Joseph Eatres, Julie Chan, Tristan Jimenez, Melissa Rojas, Joseph Eontreras, Jose Herrara, Curtis Johnson, Jorge DelaTorre, Maria Alvarado, and Matthew Salcedo.

He was a wise man and some of his ideas were placed in his pyramid of success. Even though he taught another sport, much applies to tennis.
